It combines extensive raster GIS capabilities with some vector GIS capabilities. As a tool for the mountain cartographer it can replace numerous special-purpose utilities, with indexed, integer or floating point data able to be manipulated inside a georeferenced environment. I will show how I used GRASS on Linux running on a PC to work with DEM and landcover data for a reference map of Alaska. DEM manipulations included: merging, resolution bumping, reprojecting, and relief shading. Landcover manipulations included reprojecting, merging, edge-growing and reclassification.
