Abstract (Keynote address)

New technology now allows us to create physical models directly from GIS data. We will explain the process and show examples of finished models that demonstrate this new capability.

Solid terrain models convey two sets of information simultaneously. The elevation data is physically rendered by cutting fine cross-sections through a solid block of material. A second process prints a full color image directly onto the terrain surface to show aerial photography, place names, boundaries and other types of overlain data. The result is a unique way of viewing the GIS data that is much easier for laymen and professionals to quickly understand.
